In 2004, ten
South African organisations (Arepp Theatre for Life; The
Catholic Institute of Education; the Children’s
Institute; Dance 4 Life South Africa; God’s Golden Acre;
Save the Children UK; The Scouts Association of South
Africa; Stellenbosch University, Targeted AIDS
Interventions and Twilight Children’s Home) which are
all working with children in the context of the HIV and
AIDS pandemic, were invited by Stop AIDS Now! to form an
Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) partnership. The
aim of this partnership is to improve upon their own
interventions and jointly influence the well-being of
children in South Africa, through structured learning
and collaboration.
A shared vision is being built through regular
structured dialogue and agreement has been reached to
follow a “4-life” philosophy. This is a creative, rights
based, holistic approach to enable and encourage
children and young people, within their contexts, to be
agents of positive change and development, for
themselves and their communities. This includes:
-
The promotion of gender equality
-
The integration of monitoring and evaluation systems
-
The development of mechanisms for sustainability
-
The meaningful participation of children and young
people, and those with responsibility for them, in
their contexts
-
And
utilization of the skills, experiences,
methodologies and knowledge of the 4 Life partners
