Dance4Life South Africa
Dance4Life is a global, interactive, participatory and solution/action-oriented HIV/AIDS programme, that uses a contemporary multimedia approach. The project aims to mobilise young people to become powerful ‘Agents of Change’ - through edutainment; a mix of education and cultural & performance arts.
Dance4Life South Africa, was officially launched during December 2005 in Durban, South Africa, and is aiming to actively involve young people in HIV/AIDS, in a way that is appealing to them.
“Rationale”
In South Africa, an estimated 5.6 million people are infected with HIV. A large majority of people, who are living with HIV and AIDS, are aged between 14-25 years of age, according the to the latest UNAIDS study (2005), between 15-16% of young people from 15-19 years are infected with HIV. This leaves South Africa as one of the most heavily affected countries in the world.
The Dance4Life school initiative aims to address the needs of those young people who form the group that is highest at risk of contracting HIV. The most ideal venue to target these young people are in their schools, during school
The Dance4Life School 4Life Project, Skills 4Life Project as well as the Connecting 4Life Project, once fully developed, will include these youth in schools, who are at higher risk of contracting HIV, as well as other STIs.
“Goal”
To contribute to the reduction of prevalence and incidence of HIV in young people aged between 13 and 19 in South Africa.
“Frame work”
The Dance4Life initiative has two dimensions that serve as the framework for its implementation:

History
After a year (2004) of intensive preparations, in which the Dance4Life concept was tested with youth panels and pilots at schools, Dance4Life South Africa took part in the first global Dance4Life dance event world-wide.
The event took place on the 27th of November 2004, on three continents: The Netherlands, South Africa and Indonesia and saw tens of thousands of pupils, millions of viewers and readers from South Africa, The Netherlands and Indonesia get involved.
After the event, Dance4Life South Africa refined its programme to give it ‘meaning’ in the South African context, and presented its new and dynamic initiative in December 2005 in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.
Other Dance4Life Countries:
One of the facets of the Dance4Life programme that makes it so wonderfully vibrant is the fact that it is part of a greater, global, Dance4Life movement.
To date, South Africa stands alongside the Netherlands, Kenya, Nigeria, Vietnam, Ethiopia, Germany, Russia, Tanzania, Ireland, Indonesia and the United Kingdom. Each country is currently developing and implementing a Dance4Life programme that is country-specific and culturally sensitive.
